Top 10 Home Electrical Safety Tips:

  1. Use a qualified, licensed electrician for repair work.
  2. Inspect regularly, repair loose outlets, and replace cracked, worn electrical cords promptly.
  3. Watch for hot or discolored switch plates, flickering lights, or buzzing sounds.
  4. Unplug electrics if you smell something burning.
  5. Use extension cords temporarily, not as permanent wiring.
  6. Keep cords out of walkways and high-traffic areas.
  7. If children are present, install tamper-resistant outlets to protect against shock.
  8. Keep water and other liquids at least 5 feet away from electrical equipment and sources of electricity.
  9. Install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) which help prevent electrical incidents like electrical shock, ground faults, fires, overheating, and the destruction of wire insulation.
