Planet Vs. Plastic:

Each of us in the US discards over 2,000 lbs. of waste per year. About 40 percent has been food waste, which is now addressed by the Green Bin. So the focus here is on recycle waste, specifically plastics. As plastic never fully degrades but only gets smaller, it ends up as micro (<5mm) and nano (invisible) particles, constituting 99% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, now twice the size of Texas.  Litter ends up in the storm drains. As there’s no filter or treatment, it all washes into the ocean. Additionally, while litter is relatively easy to avoid, another culprit, our laundry, is harder to control. One small load of synthetic clothing releases about 9 million micro plastic fibers which drain into soil and sewer system. These are found in marine life, from plankton all the way to whales. Now, they are even in human

What are some things we can do?

  • Buy organic material – cotton, wool, hemp, bamboo, silk.
  • Do laundry smarter – air dry instead of using a dryer, which releases fibers into the air.
  • Avoid cosmetics with PE, PP, PET – all plastic based.
  • Use public transit, walk and bike, as car tires releases microplastics which account for 28% of it found in the ocean.
  • Do NOT microwave in plastic containers.
  • For the bathroom, use bamboo toothbrushes, silk/bamboo/corn fiber floss, or reusable floss picks made from recycled paper, toothpaste tablets in jars, bar soaps, metal razors, metal or glass bottles for shampoo and body wash.
  • For the kitchen, use brushes and scrubs made of coconut coir, and rags instead of sponges and wipes, metal and glass containers.

Every step we take towards these goals get us closer to a healthier and less toxic environment, with healthier bodies and minds.
